Rhode
IsIand Self-employed (1099 Employees and Sole proprietors) Health Insurance
Quotes and Requirements Before bothering to even get a quote you
need to make sure you qualify. Getting health insurance The on-going lack of comprehensive affordable health insurance options for individuals and families in Rhode Island persists due to our elected officials continued reluctance to simply adopt standardized reforms used in the majority of states in the rest of the country --including Connecticut and New Hampshire. In most states (except for the stubborn states in the Northeast such as RI, MA, VT, ME, NY, NJ) health insurance for individuals and families are both affordable and plentiful with many carriers and plans to choose from. Until we can get our elected and appointed officials to do the right thing....in the meantime...... IN Rhode Island, as a self-employed person you may obtain annual renewable health insurance originally intended for businesses with 2 to 50 employees IF you meet the following criteria:
Part-time business owners for example Amway
distributors, do not qualify. You must be in business full time and have proof
of business as specified above. If you can not meet these requirements your only
comprehensive annual renewable health insurance options are available directly
through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island. If you have your health, you should be be able to
qualify for the Blue Cross plans regardless of whether or not you have
maintained prior coverage. Beware of limited benefit plans that
masquerade as full major medical plans but
in reality are limited benefit plans with very limited protection and are
extremely expensive considering how little medical care you might likely need is
actually covered. Some of these companies are nationally advertised as
"sensible health insurance for the self-employed". These plans
typically have set dollar amounts per day that they will pay out if you go into
a hospital or fixed amounts for specific procedures that are usually only a
fraction of what the operation would actually cost. They may advertise big
lifetime maximum benefits of $10 million or more but at the same time have a
much smaller lifetime maximum per illness. These plans are sold by captive
agents - NOT by independent agents and brokers who have a better ability to look
out for your best interests because they can sell multiple products offered by
multiple companies they themselves choose. Sadly many individuals and families
in states like Rhode Island and other states in the northeast where insurance
costs are higher and choices are fewer If you met the above requirements to
qualify to obtain group coverge as a self employed person in Rhode Island,
