Connecticut is one of the more "normal" New England States that offers choice among health insurance options and affordability comparable to the majority of the nation while most of the rest of New England lags far behind.

Tips for Individuals , Families and the self-employed in Connecticut:

We've narrowed the options down for you and if you are looking for not only the most affordable, but also the best coverage for your money, we've determined that Time/Fortis/John Alden/Assurant- (formerly Fortis) beats the competition.

This is true especially when it comes to plain quality comprehensive insurance that includes everything. You won't find anything important not  eligible to be covered with these companies. Whereas the competition restricts or does not cover some important benefits the Fortis plans are also eligible to be used with a Health Savings Account (HSA) now available in Connecticut.

If you are willing to pay more  for bells and whistles, we find Celtic to offer the best all around coverage for the money.

A recent family plan comparison:

Based on advertised and unadvertised rates for the best coverage available for a family with parents aged 47 and  45 with two children, we found John Alden and Time, both a subsidiaries of Fortis (now Assurant) had HSA qualified plans that were by far the most competitively priced plans compared to the competition.

Co. Ind/Ded Fam/Ded COI% Cost/Mo
Time/JA** N/A $3000 100% $365.35
Time/JA N/A $4100 100% $304.73
Time/JA N/A $5100 100% $268.66
GR $2500 $5000 100% $369.52
GR $5000 $10,000 100% $202.79
Anth $5000 $10,000 100% $413.46
Celtic* $5000 $15,000 100% $415.16

JA- John Alden  and Time both subsidiaries of Assurant, formerly Fortis have HSA qualified high deductible plans. Individual plan deductibles are typically half of the family deductibles but family plans have aggregate family deductibles only.
GR- Golden Rule
Anth- Anthem Blue Cross
Celtic- Celtic Insurance Co - the only plan
which included a $10 office visit   co-pay
inside the PPO network

Conclusion: The above table shows how carriers generally compare price-wise however, we found what we feel are important limitations and exclusions with Golden Rule and Anthem which is why we would not recommend them.

Golden Rule only provides $150 per person of prescriptions drugs after a 12 month waiting period and Anthem Blue Cross does not provide any coverage for physical therapy; home healthcare; skilled nursing; or mental health which is why we have chosen to work with Celtic, Time and John Alden only for individual plans in Connecticut.

The above comparison is deemed reliable but should be used for information purposes only. Before making any final decision about health insurance it is imperative to read the the complete plan outline of coverage including all plan limitations and exclusions.
